36 of the Best Recording Studios in the World

Intro

Hola, people. Let’s embark upon the global quest of discovering the most renowned music recording studios.

Some of the studios we will be visiting are renowned for being the most pioneering and iconic music spaces, where some of the most influential artists have recorded some of the tracks that have gone on to shape generations.

Additionally, we will explore the studios that are designed ad hoc for certain services such as audio mixing, audio mastering, vocal recording, instrumental recording, etc.

Picture going on a trip around the globe and seeing how musicians in every place of the World make music.

We are talking about the most coveted sound recording rooms ever conceived, housing legendary musicians who skillfully crafted brand-new tunes that still hold water and authentically color our emotions after being released into the World for many years.

Our journey takes us to some of the World’s most noteworthy recording studios, the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles, Kingston’s vibrant energy, London’s musical heritage, and winding up with the pulsating rhythm of Lagos.

Each recording studio holds a unique story and background behind it that many people may not know about, all of which are responsible for some of the most famous songs ever written and the rise of great artists and are responsible for helping further the frontiers of audio technology.

When you first step into the studio, you are immediately engulfed by a wave of pure, euphoric sound. The air around you buzzes with the excitement of an intricately spun, emotionally charged melody. Although the room is like any other—old, musty, crowded with equipment—the atmosphere rolls off you in almost physical waves. It empties you of all thought and all impediments until only clarity of sound and emotion remains. You float, or you are flown, across lonely, abandoned landscapes. You are broken and rebuilt with the beat of the drum. You are not even, you realize, “you” in the same way.

The word’s meaning has been skewed and distorted by years and years of your own use, dulling its edges and coating it with dust. For the first time, you are rendered pure. You see the World anew.

Your surroundings awaken but do not jar—instead, your skin acts as a sort of amplifier, giving life (and the brilliance of it) before the bodies of others do. This time, there’s an extra step from sound to air to blood, making the entire process less akin to listening and more to breathing. This time, you truly, truly understand.

Not only does the advanced technology get you super hyped, but the fact that you’re in the same place where some significant music history went down hits you right in the feels.

The intricacies may be in a Beatles harmony or that one more grunge anthem from Nirvana.

The music artists Beyonce and Bob Marley created passionate and rhythmic songs that would trap the coax of the whole World.

As we begin this adventure together, we are about to uncover certain mysteries hidden away in the depths of each recording studio we are about to encounter.

Lurking underneath the surface of these hallowed rooms is something far more profound than any piece of gear or recording technique:

      • The essence of countless brilliant and seminal records.

      • The spirit of the musicians who made them.

      • The souls of the men and women who permed the work.

Discovering the history of each studio and the artists and music nurtured is an endless commitment for us. Would it not be exciting to see the unbelievable albums born there?

Buckle up and prepare yourself for a whirlwind sightseeing tour of the most renowned and potentially most relaxed recording studios in the World – the encounters you’re about to have with the walls of these environments, for they are about as sacred to the true audiophile as any Graceland or the Dakota.

It is a voyage that is not just walls and metal and smoke to Mr. Bohannon.

The miraculous results occur by merging passion, technology, and creativity.

Beyond the door, the real elite are waiting to hear the wonders we will create in the confines of this room. Creating golden melodies that dance up in the charts, each music industry member has stepped the magic threshold millions of times before.

Despite the many difficulties you may encounter, are you truly ready? Are you prepared to face that audacity that will be met when times get tough? Are you prepared to be knocked off your high pedestal?

    9. Motor Museum – Liverpool, UK

Motor Museum isn’t just another recording hub; it’s a testament to the city’s vibrant history, born out of a defunct motor museum, and today, it’s where music magic happens. This revered studio was launched in the late 80s under “The Pink Museum.” Echo & The Bunnymen, all motorcycle fanatics, were instrumental in its inception, pointing towards a shuttered motor museum as the ideal location for a new studio. And so, after a year of planning and construction, The Pink Museum rose from the ashes of the old.

The Motor Museum is different from your typical recording studio. Its cabin-like rooms within a massive 240-square-metre warehouse area are a treasure trove of rich, ambient sounds that have become part of the studio’s signature1. It has been a fertile ground for artists like British reggae band Aswad, members of Liverpool FC, and Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, who recorded their 1991 album “Sugar Tax” here, birthing hits like ‘Sailing On The Seven Seas’ and ‘Pandora’s Box’.

Under the guidance of Al Groves since 2012, the studio has seen a few changes, but the spirit of music creation remains as vibrant as ever. The studio has a Neve 8232 console with 32 channels, an impressive outboard collection, and a microphone collection built around classics like the Neumanns U87 and TLM1701. This powerhouse of a studio first opened its doors in 1977 and has been setting the bar for professional recording facilities worldwide ever since.

Originally a Con Edison power relay station, the building also had a stint as a television studio, producing shows like “Let’s Make A Deal” and “Dark Shadows.” It was later transformed into the Power Station Studio, and it lived up to its name! Springsteen knew they’d made one of their most excellent recordings then and there.
